Packing

To assure that your possessions arrive at your destination in good shape, please pay special attention to packing procedures. Packing carefully and properly is critically important to insure that none of your treasures are damaged in transit.

The best boxes to use are those specially manufactured for the moving industry. Packing boxes are designed specifically for strength, and are uniform in size which makes stacking and loading them into your truck much more efficient.

Each carton is designed and recommended for specified contents: book cartons, wardrobes, dish packs, picture and mirror cartons, lamp shaped, etc. For the most efficient packing, use the carton for its intended cantents. For instance, only pack books with other books to avoid breaking fragile items. Proper packing is the best insurance for your valuable possessions.

If you decide not to use our expert packing services and plan to pack yourself, allow plenty of time to complete the job before moving day. Packing Tips
  • Buy packing materials two weeks ahead and begin packing early. (Many times used packing cartons can be found for half-price. Ask your Affordable Moving Service agent for prices on used moving cartons!)
  • Avoid using newspaper as packing material. Newsprint can stain delicate items.
  • Reinforce cartons by taping them on the bottom before packing.
  • Proper packing is critical. Select cartons appropriate to their contents.
  • Pack each carton full. Fill unused space with paper and seal the carton shut with packing tape.
  • Pack one room at a time, labeling cartons clearly on the sides, not the top of the carton.
  • Mark cartons containing fragile items "TOP LOAD ONLY" or "GLASS."
  • Finish packing the day before the move.

    Tips for specific Items
  • Lamps -- Remove shades and bulbs and pack in sturdy cartons marked "TOP LOAD ONLY."
  • Pictures & mirrors -- Wrap in paper, pack in mirror packs and stuff sides with paper.
  • Clothing -- Use wardrobe boxes or 3.0 to 6.0 cubic feet (cu.ft.) cartons.
  • Electronics -- Pack stereos, television sets, computers, printers and peripherals in original shipping boxes if possible. (Be sure to remove the drum unit from laser printers before shipping.) Remove all wires, cables and chords. If original containers are not available, wrap in paper pads or bubble wrap. Avoid using plastic "peanuts" with electronics as they may carry a static charge that may damage electronics.
  • Books -- Use 1.5 cu. ft. cartons only.
  • Records, Tapes & CD's -- Pack full and tight.
  • Tables -- Remove legs if possible, put hardware in a bag and stow in a drawer.
  • Dishes & Glasses -- Use dish packs. Cushion bottom of carton with crushed paper. Wrap each piece individually and pack plates on edge tightly, but not flat.
  • Washer & Dryer -- Disconnect all hoses and place in tub of washer. Use a washer pack to immobilize the tub. Put the dryer vent hose in the dryer and keep the hardware together in a bag in the washer or dryer.
  • Refrigerator & Freezer -- Empty the refrigerator, defrost and dry before moving day, if possible. Reload the freezer with the contents packed tightly together with most of the heavier items on the bottom.
  • Furniture -- Remove legs if possible. Place screws, wing nuts and miscellaneous hardware in bags and place in a dresser drawer. Pack drawers of dressers and chests full, with breakable items nested securely within padding. Do not oil or wax furniture just before moving.
  • Garage items -- Drain gas from lawn mowers, weed eater, chain saws, and other equipment if moving more than a few blocks.
  • Garden tools -- Tape shovels, rakes, and other long-handled tools together. Drain hoses and coil them neatly with ends tied together.
